OLR News Term 3 Week 2
Principal's Update
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 2. I trust you had a really good start to the term.
I hope you found the Parent Teacher Interviews a great opportunity to discuss your children and ask any questions you had regarding your children’s academic reports. As we are now halfway through the year, it is important to see the progress your children have made and to guide them for the second half of the year.
We have our Grandparent’s Day celebrations this week and I am looking forward to meeting all the amazing grandparents we have in our community. This is such a special celebration so please join us if you are able.
Parent Classroom Volunteer’s Information Session. It is great to start having parent helpers in the classroom again. If you are able to help and have let your child’s teacher know, you are asked to attend an information session on this Tuesday, 25th at 9:30am in the Library. If you can’t attend the session but want to volunteer, please let the class teacher know and I will try to organise a second session. As we have not had helpers in the classrooms for a long time, it is essential that you attend this session prior to being in the classrooms.
I hope you have a great week.
Kind regards
Yvette Owens
Assistant Principal's Update
Dear Parents and Carers,
Each year, in Term 3, we hold a Public Speaking Competition across the school.
Public speaking has a significant place in the K-6 English Syllabus and interweaves both oral language and communication skills; an integral part of a child’s overall literacy development. This public speaking competition provides an excellent opportunity to enhance students’ oral language and communication skills in front of an audience.
Timeline:
Beginning Week 4 T3 (7th August) - Students present speech/poem to their class
End of Week 4 T3 (11th August) - 2 x Winners from each class to present speech to their grade
Week 5 T3 (Date TBC) - 2 x Finalists from each grade to present speech to school
Week 6 T3 (Date TBC) - Public Speaking Champions announced and medals presented at assembly
Please see attached document for further information, tips on public speaking and topics for each grade.
Kind Regards,
Maree Sawyer

Dance Troupe News
In week 2 we will be starting up a new dance for both senior and junior dance troupe.

Thanks Mrs Johnson
Religious Education Update
We are looking forward to celebrating Granparent's Day on Friday 28th July.
A traditional part of our Grandparent’s Day celebration is the slide show presentation of photos of our students with their grandparents. With space limitations this year and the need for the Liturgy to be held outdoors, the slideshow this year will form part of the activities in the classroom visits. Each grade will be compiling their own slide show to be shown at this time.
If you would like a photo included in the slide show, please email or Seesaw message the photo directly to your child’s class teacher by next Monday, July 24th.
We ask that all attendees RSVP for catering purposes.
Parent Engagement Coordinator (PEC) Update
Welcome back to term 3! I am looking forward to hearing all the holiday stories from the children and families. I hope you all enjoyed some wonderful family time whether you stayed at home, or you went away.
This week I look forward to attending some of the extra events happening at the school and get to personally meet some more parents, grandparents, and carers.
A reminder for the Sacrament of Confirmation: Parents of children in Year 3 and above who are Baptised Catholic, are invited to attend the Information and Enrolment evening for the Sacrament of Confirmation on Tuesday 1 August at 7:00pm at Our Lady of the Rosary, Parish Hall, The Entrance. (Children are not required to attend) The Sacrament of Confirmation is when the graces your child received at Baptism are sealed with the reception of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. Please see attached flyer which includes a letter to parents and dates for your diary. I have also attached a copy of the enrolment form to complete and bring with you to the information evening. Hard copies of these flyers have been sent home with students, if you need another copy, please contact me at either the school or the parish offices.
If you missed it, the latest edition of Parent Talk is now available from the Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP). Please click on the link to read. Parent Talk
Date for your diary: Tuesday 15 August, there will be a school Mass at 10:00am held at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 239-243 The Entrance Rd, The Entrance to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption, which is a Holy Day of obligation for Catholics. The Assumption refers to the Blessed Virgin Mary being assumed — body and soul — into heaven at the end of her earthly life. We invite parents, grandparent and carers to attend the Mass and join us afterwards for light refreshments in the Parish Hall (next door to the church).
The parish Kid’s Club will be on Saturday 5 August at 3pm-4:45pm. The theme will be on the Feast of the Assumption leading into actual Feast Day on 15 August. Kid’s Club is a Parish social group for children aged 5-12(and their siblings) who want to make new friends, have fun, and learn more about Jesus! Parents are welcome to stay, or you can drop off and pick up (parents must stay for children under 5 yrs.). Our group leaders have WWCC. We encourage all to join us at 5pm Mass after Kids Club. See flyer for more details.
Thursday morning Cuppa Catch Up continues this term. We would love to see more parents, grandparents and carers join us. Conversation is always light, friendly, and a great way to exchange information and ideas with other parents. This combined with some book covering or doll painting helps us to focus on other things for an hour and is calming, relaxing and good for the mind. We hope you can join us.

Thank you to both parents and children who have been very understanding whilst I have been having trouble getting some items on the menu, I am hoping this term will be easier with my suppliers having access to stock.

Athletics Champions and CCC
A big congratulations to our Athletics Age Champions who received their medallions on Friday morning assembly. They participated in many events on our Athletics day and demonstrated great sportsmanship in all their events.
On Friday the 4th of August, a selection of our students will be representing our school in the CCC Athletics carnival at Mingara. We wish them great success and look forward to hearing all about their day.
Some of our sporting stars were absent on Friday so they will receive their medals this week.
Bateau Bay Square Drawing Us Together
In honour of NAIDOC Week 2023, Bateau Bay Square partnered with local primary schools to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across the community. The Drawing Us Together initiative now in it's fourth year, is a celebration of indigenous culture through the creation of a children’s story book written by Indigenous authors and illustrated by local school students. This year they have partnered with author, Bianca Stawiarski a Badimaya (Badimia) and Ukrainian woman, to write this years short story. The story, Gami Winda and Dyindi-Dyndi is about listening and connecting to country and discovering the stories of your elders. Joined by local primary schools, students were asked to submit a series of artwork to be featured as the illustrations within the story book.
OLR's Aboriginal Education Worker Jodi worked with students to create their artworks to be submitted. The finalists have been on display for the past few weeks and the winners will be announced in August.
Check out some of the entries below and we will keep you updated on the winners.
