OLR News Term 3 Week 4
Principal's Update
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 4. This term is already flying by far too quickly!
Building Update:
We were given great news this week. The DA for our new building has finally been approved and we have had a Project Manager appointed to oversee the building works. We should also have the Building Company signed up by the end of August. I have met with the Project Manager and, while a timeline has not yet been developed, they should be starting by the middle to end of September.
Fr Brian Ordination Anniversary:
We would like to congratulate Fr Brian on the 40th Anniversary of his Ordination. This is such an amazing milestone, and we would like to thank Fr Brian for his years of service to God and us, his people. Fr Brian has served many communities in his 40 years and has given much of his time to the school communities. We are grateful for the Masses he has said for our children as well as the many visits to classes. We are truly blessed to have him as our Parish Priest.
Learning Meetings:
Ensuring our teachers continuously refine and update their skills is critical to the learning of our students. To support this, teachers take part in Learning Meetings each week. During these meetings teachers, along with their grade partners and key learning areas coaches, develop goals to enhance the learning of the students. The goals set are based on the needs of the children in each class. This ongoing Professional Learning is highly valued by the teachers and is having a positive impact on the students’ learning.
Kind regards
Yvette Owens
Public Speaking Competition
We are looking forward to the commencement of the class speeches this week. Please see attached a timeline of the next few weeks of the public speaking competition.

Religious Education Update
Feast Of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop
Next Tuesday, August 8th, marks the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. We will be celebrating with a whole school Liturgy at 9am in the courtyard and you are all welcome to join us.
Mary MacKillop is Australia’s first saint. She lived a life of faithful service to God. She established Catholic education and founded the Sisters of St Joseph. Mary championed the needs of the poor and believed in treating everyone with compassion and respect.
Mary MacKillop lived by her saying that you “should never see a need without doing something about it.” As we celebrate the feast day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, we pray that we may be inspired by her example to live a life of faithful service to God and to show compassion and love for others.
Last term, Mrs. Owens and I, were privileged to attend an evening at Mary Mac’s at Woy Woy, where we heard about the wonderful work they do to support the most vulnerable in the community. A team of volunteers provide over one hundred sit down meals a day to people in need. Mary Mac’s also offers a place for people to shower and to wash clothes. It provides connection, value and belonging without judgement as well as offering friendly support and companionship to address the experience of isolation and loneliness of vulnerable people in our community.
Mary Mac’s was established by a group of people from the Woy Woy Parish who responded to the call of Mary MacKillop to “Never see a need without doing something about it.” It is now under the umbrella of Catholic Care, but staffed mainly by volunteers, and with little funding.
To support Mary Mac’s, we are going to have a gold coin fundraiser on the Feast of Mary MacKillop next Tuesday. With all the sporting events happening around the world at the moment, we thought we would make the mufti day a sports jersey themed one. Students are invited to wear a sports jersey to school for a gold coin donation.
Feast of the Assumption
On Tuesday August 15th, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption with a whole school Mass at the Church at 10am. On this Feast Day, we remember that Mary was taken up to heaven body and soul. We celebrate the life that Mary lived and the example she showed to all of us of how to live a life of faith and love for others. We pray that we will also be people of great faith who find time every day to praise and thank God for everything we have been blessed with.
Father’s Day Save the Date!
We will be celebrating Father’s Day on Friday September 1st with a BBQ breakfast, Liturgy and classroom visits. More details will be sent in the coming weeks.
Parent Engagement Coordinator (PEC) Update
The year is passing so fast, it's hard to believe we are in August already.
Thank you to parents that have been coming to our Thursday morning cuppa and chats. These mornings have been a great experience for our parents to share and exchange information along with completing activities that benefit our students. A few things to come from our coffee catch ups to date include: finding work for two parents, encouraging one to further her studies and joining forces to help a family move their trampoline.
Mrs Mylan, our Librarian has asked me to pass on her sincere thanks to our Thursday morning cuppa group for helping to cover so many books for the library. She said that the children have been really excited lately when she has been able to introduce them to all the new books. Mrs Mylan is very grateful that the children now have a greater selection of books to borrow and build on their love of reading. So never underestimate the work we do over a cuppa and the effect it can have on others that we may never see.
We will be trying our hand at painting the wooden dolls in the coming weeks to assist Mrs Moore to increase the resources in the classroom for the Religious Education lessons.
With the rising cost of living many families may be struggling with both financial and emotional stress and many find it hard to reach out to ask for help. There are many services that can offer assistance to families and individuals in need. If you or some you know need assistance but don’t know where to go, please reach out to me. I may not be able to solve all your problems but I may be able to help you find someone who can help. Please email me colleen.smith1@dbb.catholic.edu.au to arrange a confidential appointment. These appointments can be arranged off site from the school if preferred.
Please see attached After Hours Crisis Support Guide to download.
PBL News
This week, the students have been learning about the importance of 'caring for others'. Students learnt about the different ways we can care for others both emotionally and physically.
Our wonderful PBL team taught this lesson to our Kindy, year 1 and year 2 students and showed maturity and respect when teaching.
In other PBL news, Peter Bobby Lewis was awarded to 6 Gold by our PBL spotter Mrs Johnson. Our new PBL spotter is currently on the hunt looking for a class who is following all our school rules and showing care for others.
Canteen News
It's great to be back in full swing for Term 3. Thank you to everyone who gives up their time to support the canteen.

Little Learners Storytime
On Monday we held our Little Learners Storytime in the library. Mrs Smith, on of our Kindy teachers, led the session. The children enjoyed the story Pete the Cat's Magic Sunglasses before creating their own pair of magic sunglasses.
Lots of fun was had. Our next session will be held on Thursday the 24th of August and will be Book Week themed. So come dressed as a character from your favourite book.
CCC Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all the children who represented the school at the CCC Athletics Carnival at Mingara on Friday. Our students participated in a variety of track and field events and did OLR proud! Well done to all.
Aboriginal Childrens Day Friday 4th August
National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day (Children’s Day) is our national day dedicated to celebrating our children. Children’s Day is celebrated across the country each year on 4 August.Children’s Day is a time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families and communities and all Australians, celebrate the strengths and culture of our children. It is an opportunity for us to show our support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, as well as learn about the crucial impact that culture, family and community play in the life of every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander child.
Some of our Aboriginal children shared with us some thoughts on their culture and how they engage in their culture both at school and if life.
