OLR News Term 2 Week 8 2024
Principal's Update
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to Week 8! This term is certainly getting away from us.
I hope you had a fabulous weekend.
Staff Development Day:
As a staff, we took part in Professional Learning around the teaching of Fluency in reading. It was a really full day, but the learning was highly valuable. While there were times throughout the day where we were affirmed in what we are already doing, we were able to add to our skills and knowledge in this area of teaching. This was not an isolated day, but rather a part of a series of professional learning opportunities through the SPELD organisation that our staff have taken part in, and which will benefit all our students.
Blessing of the Eileen O’Connor School Foundation Stone:
On Wednesday, along with the Priests and Principals in our Diocese, I had the privilege of attending the Blessing of the Foundation Stone for the Eileen O’Connor K to 12 Catholic School for Students with Specific Needs. This purpose built, state of the art school will be built on the site of the St Peter’s School. This is such a wonderful move forward for our Diocese and the Central Coast.
Eileen O’Connor, whom the school is named in honour of, was a truly exceptional woman. She had serious health issues and lived with pain every day, dying at the age of 28. Regardless of this, she devoted her short life to the care of the sick and poor. As Bishop Anthony noted, Eileen O’Connor did more for the care of the sick and poor in her 28 years than most of us will do in our lifetimes.
Communication:
We had made the decision to close the canteen on Friday due to the walkathon and had let our whole community know over the past two weeks. However, a number of families missed this communication. It is timely therefore, to remind everyone that everything you need to know is shared through our weekly newsletters and Compass Notifications and it is important that you read them, so you don’t miss anything. All communication is also shared via social media.
The link to the current newsletter is shared by me on Compass each Sunday afternoon / evening so you are prepared for the week. All current and past newsletters can also be located on the school website.

Reports and Parents Teacher Interviews:
The teachers are currently writing the School Academic Reports for all students, and these will be available via Compass on Friday 28th June (Week 9).
We will be holding Parent Teacher interviews on Wednesday 3rd July. We will send out information regarding booking these interviews later this week.
Walkathon:
Despite the cold, wind and lots of rain the walkathon happened! The weather was being carefully monitored throughout the morning and the indications were that the rain was out to sea! That however changed quite quickly, resulting in a wet finish to the walkathon! Are weather forecasts ever right?
Unfortunately, I was unwell so couldn’t be there but by all accounts, despite the weather, the children had a great time.
The children, teachers and volunteers were soaked. While adults feel the cold, most of the children didn’t seem to and were all looking for their Zooper Dooper at the finish line! They enjoyed the adventure in the rain.
I don’t know what it is about OLR, anytime we plan outdoor events it rains! Lots of prayers our Athletics Carnival this week sees sunshine!
Thank you to the parents who were able to pick their children up. We want to assure you however, that any child who remained at school was taken care of and their classrooms were very warm! What did we do before air conditioners!
Thank you to the PCN and the band of helpers. These events don’t happen without your help and positive enthusiasm.
I hope you have a really wonderful week.
Kind regards
Yvette

Office News!
Holiday Leave
If you are going on leave, please read the guidelines below.
- If under 10 school days, please put this on Compass and send the teachers a Seesaw message as a curtesy to let them know.
- If over 10 school days, please collect relevant paperwork from the school office, complete and return it so that Principal can approve. This will be entered on Compass for you and you will be emailed the approval. Please send the teachers a Seesaw message as a curtesy to let them know.
Early Pick Up Permission
If your child is being collected early by someone other than a parent, it is a requirement that a parent calls or emails the office to give permission. Parents will need to provide the name of the person collecting their child. We ask that you do not send this to the class teacher via Seesaw as they may not see it until after school. Please note that the person you have as an Emergency contact is for us to use if we cannot contact you in the event of illness/emergency. This does not give them permission to pick up early.
Emergency Contacts & Change of Routine information
Please note that the Emergency Contact we have for your child is for the school to use in an emergency if we can't contact the parents/guardian. Emergency Contacts do not have permission to collect your child during school hours.
If your child is being collected early by someone other than parent/guardian, or has a change of routine after school, please contact the school office to notify us of this. Do not send a message to the teacher via Seesaw re these changes as they may be away or not see it as they are teaching. The Office staff will not allow collection of a child until we have confirmed this with a parent/guardian.
Medication at School - A reminder that Request to Administer Medication forms need to be completed each year. If your child had the completed form in 2023, you are covered for a short time, but please have the doctor complete this asap.
If your child has never had medication at school but now needs to do so, please have the attached form completed, signed and stamped by the doctor and bring the medication to the school office in the original container. This includes prescription medication as well as over the counter meds (pharmacists can complete this form for puffers and over the counter meds. Without this completed form, we are unable to have the medication on site (please do not put medications in your child's bag for them to take).

All students participating in the 800m need to be at Mingara by 8.30am. Parents are responsible to get their children to the facility for this race as it is run before the carnival commences. A reminder that the 800m is a 8-13yr old event only.
We are looking forward to a wonderful day!
